"He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and will not despise their prayer." Psalm 102:17

Newsletter Issue 13 — January 2013

Dear Friend of Agapé Heart

Our prayer is that 2013 will be for you a glorious year of divine favour as you experience God’s unspeakable love and mercy. For those in Christ, we pray that in His infinite goodness, the Lord would grant you His strength, restoration, direction and the heights of joy, as you seek Him wholeheartedly and tarry in His presence continually.

For those yet to know our Lord Jesus, we pray that the Captain and Author of Salvation will not pass you by this year. May the Lord in His purest mercy bring you out of the enemy’s lies into truth, out of darkness into His marvellous light. May the grace of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ crown your year and set you on the course of glory — eternity with God. The Bible says concerning Jesus Christ:

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)

God... commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead. (Acts 17:30-31)

We are deeply grateful to all who supported us last year. Thank you for every prayer and every penny. Thank you to all who attended our event in December 2012. We raised over £800. All glory be to God! For me, it was great again simply to have our attendees read aloud and reflect on God’s word regarding the poor. Scripture is replete with verses which communicate God’s heart for the needy and exhort us to help the poor.

Ponder afresh verses such as:

The Lord watches over the strangers;
He relieves the fatherless and widow;
But the way of the wicked He turns upside down.    (Psalm 146:9)

He shall regard the prayer of the destitute,
And shall not despise their prayer.    (Psalm 102:17)

Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.    (James 1:27)

Further, our Lord backs His word with the compassion He deposits in our hearts, making us ambassadors of His love and care to those in desperate need. Almost invariably the spontaneous response of the recipients of help from Agapé Heart is to praise God. The local church ministers tell us that the work of Agapé Heart makes evangelism easier as the villagers come to know that they are not forgotten. God sees their plight and He cares for them.

It’s back to school for our primary and secondary school children, some of whom are pictured below. May the Lord bless and prosper them for the glory of His name.

Two of our students are taking the West Africa School Certificate (WASC) this June - Chidinma Ogbu (Senior WASC) and Oluchi Ogbu (Junior WASC).

We continue by God’s grace to fund hospital treatment for the desperately ill, who otherwise would not receive treatment because they have no means of paying for medical care. We thank God for the recently-completed, successful treatment of Mr Udonsi Kalu (below) for debilitating typhoid fever and acute malaria.

We further give thanks to God for the food distribution to 100 poor villagers, including many widows, on 21st December 2012, and we hope for a bigger food distribution at the end of March 2013.

We are looking to provide more resources for the poorest families in the villages. Please consider whether you can help us specifically with this.

We plan to hold a fund-raising run/walk in April. Please let us know if you can help us by running or walking to raise funds for Agapé Heart at that time. Further details will follow concerning venue, date and programme.

Please pray:

  • For more resources to enable us to help more villagers;
  • That the beneficiaries and other villagers will not only experience true conversion, but will become true disciples of Christ;
  • That the churches and ministers in the villages are faithful to the cause of our Saviour, and that the entrance of God’s word will bring light to the villages;
  • For more faithful volunteers to help with the work of Agapé Heart. Please pray for our chief worker, Pastor Ifeanyi Kalu;
  • For God’s continuing hand and direction for Agapé Heart, and that all our endeavours point in every way to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, to whom all glory and honour belongs.

May the Lord God bless you richly this new year, and may the Lord of peace Himself give you His peace at all times and in every situation.

In Christ by His grace,

Patricia Newman
